Frances Collins, M.D., Ph.D., the current director of the NIH (National Institute of Health), is a physician and scientist who was amongst the leadership of the Human Genome Project. He of all people is well-qualified to make this following statement, which is one of my favorite quotes: "Genetics loads the gun, and environment pulls the trigger." Another of my tenets learned from my days as a mad scientist is this: it is not one, but a series of insults to a cell that provokes neoplastic (cancerous) changes. (Knudson A (1971). "Mutation and cancer: statistical study of retinoblastoma". Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 68 (4): 820–823)
Knudson's "multi-hit hypothesis" has great significance to the world in which we live today, where we are constantly barraged by chemical, physical, and electrical pollution. How healthy we can keep our bodies absolutely depends on two things: one, how successful we are at avoiding toxins; two, how well-equipped our bodies are to detoxify itself from the pollutants to which we expose it. The articles below highlight some of the sources of the toxins that surround us every day - the more you know, the more you will be able to avoid! As for the second part: in order for your body to function at its best, clearly you need a nervous system works at 100% efficiency, 100% of the time. If your spine is subluxated, the communication between your brain and all of the internal organs it controls (like the liver and kidneys, used for detoxification) is compromised. Given that cancer and disease results from cellular toxicity, how efficiently do you want your liver to work?
The true measure of health is how well a body adapts to the challenges set upon it by its environment. Adaptation is controlled by the nervous system, and the nervous system is inhibited by subluxation. If you have not had your spine and nervous system checked for subluxation, your quest for health may be like hitting the gas pedal when the brake is on. Call us to schedule an appointment today to see whether your brake pedal is on, and whether we can release it so that your body can handle the challenges you throw at it.
